My Approach to Working With You

Change How You Use Your Body to Root Out Reinjury

All gardeners know that a dandelion will keep growing back until its root is fully removed. Pulling the leaves off is a short term solution. My approach to try to get to the root of the problem and improve the baseline of your physical resilience and wellbeing, not merely to treat your current symptoms.

I have two goals: First, I aim to remove any restrictions present in your spine so that your nervous system can work fluently. Second, if necessary, I aim to upgrade your biomechanical patterns and integrate a healthy spine into whole body movement habits.

My intention is to create a global shift in your body rather than firefight local issues, making you more robust so that you can live your life with greater confidence and freedom.

Integrating Bowen Technique, Scar Release (MSRT) and Anatomy in Motion (AiM)

One of the main disadvantages of physical therapy is that it can wear off. You feel great for a few days after your massage or trip to the physio, but gradually the problem comes back.

I have found that the biggest reason for this (apart from obvious reinjury) are that your posture and biomechanics are off and they start to pull things back to where they were as soon as you step off the treatment table.

For this reason I use manual therapy (Bowen Technique  and Scar Release) and movement therapy ( Anatomy in Motion). Although not necessary for everyone, addressing issues in gait, which can include restrictions from scar tissue, can be transformative for some people.
Get to the Root of your Issue
"I have worked with James for 8 years at my Pilates studio and have watched him work with countless injured people. He has a real gift for working with injuries and has great success in helping his clients to overcome their physical issues. He is patient and takes the time to assess the needs of his clients and is able to properly provide them with tools to help them move, and ultimately live, pain free.

He is the 'go to' person for complicated cases and very injured bodies. His detailed knowledge of the body and how it moves gives him an incredible insight into how to move a body towards healing and developing the strength to avoid further injury. He has helped many clients avoid surgery and has helped so many people with back pain, some so bad they can barely walk into the studio.

James' understanding of injuries and ability to assess the issue successfully make him one of the best Pilates teachers I know at working with injury (and I know, quite literally, hundreds of teachers)."
